Release 2.5 - November 5, 1994
Here is the latest available information regarding PhonePak's
compatibility with various Amiga models. Many of the following
procedures require special tools or a gentle touch. If you are
unsure of your abilities, please have the procedure performed by
a qualified technician:
A2000: A few machines distort the pitch of messages due to a weak 68000
E Clock signal. Try reseating the CPU or replacing it with a genuine
Motorola part.
A3000,A3000T,A3000T/040: The Zorro II DMA circuitry on these Amiga
models is defective. The defect can be worked around in one of two
ways: You can install a Zorro II memory board AND use the A3000's
original (rev 7) Buster chip, which will allow you to utilize multiple
Zorro II DMA boards (including PhonePak); or you can upgrade to the
current (rev. 11) Buster chip, which partially fixes the problem and
allows you to use a single Zorro II DMA board.
A4000/030: No known problems.
A4000/040,A4000T: A DMA problem has been found which causes distortion
or static in PhonePak's normally clean audio, and it occurs with varying
severity during both recording and playback on many, but not all
machines. The problem has been traced to U209, the bus grant GAL on the
040 processor board. Commodore upgraded this chip in time for the first
production run of A4000Ts, as well as for some of the Canadian "LC"
versions of the A4000. The correct chip revision number is -03.
Unfortunately, although the chip is reprogrammable, it is a surface
mount chip soldered to the processor board, making it not user
serviceable. Service Management Group (610-363-4003), however, will
perform the required upgrade for $99.
The design of the PhonePak hardware is such that it exercises certain
aspects of the Amiga's DMA circuitry more strenuously than most other
DMA devices, resulting in the discovery of the latent problems
described above. Atlantis Design Group regrets any inconvenience
experienced by its customers as a result of this unfortunate situation.
The following section of this document contains corrections and
amplifications to the printed PhonePak VFX manual, which covers version
1 of the software. Changes to the software since version 1 are covered
in a disk-based document located on disk 3 that will be installed along
with the PhonePak software. The document is available in both raw
ASCII and formatted (Final Copy II) versions.
p.69, paragraph 3, "LineMan will end the call, but will attempt to send
the marked faxes before doing so": Actually, LineMan will only attempt
to send the faxes if the call is ended explicitly by pressing * or if
it is commanded to send the faxes via the Faxxess menu.
p.69, paragraph 5, "Be sure a default route is provided for each VFX
mailbox": "VFX" should be changed to "Faxxess".
p.148, last paragraph, "add the program to your startup sequence": For
Workbench 2.0 users, it is a whole lot easier to drop the LineMan icon
into the WBStartup drawer. However, when updating to newer versions of
LineMan, be sure to update the copy in the WBStartup drawer.
p.173, "Faxess.sys": The correct name of this file is "Faxxess.sys".
p.177, paragraph 3, "an ARexx command having the following format will
be sent to the designated port": The command, which should really be
called a message, appears at the top of the following page and looks
like a subheading.
p.179, paragraph 2: All occurrences of the word "Monitor" should be
replaced with "PPakMonitor".
Atlantis Design Group is pleased to offer custom C/ARexx programming
and voice message recording services to its PhonePak VFX customers at
affordable rates. Please fax your inquiries to 804-231-2328 or send
email to 71450.2050@compuserve.com.
